Clock synchronization of MPEG-2 services over packet networks

چکیده
We address the problem of time-base synchronization for MPEG services in the presence of network jitter. The conventional methods to obtain a stable clock indication are based on Phase Locked Loops (PLLs). They have the disadvantage of a long startup phase and thus are unsuitable for services that require simultaneous accuracy and rapidity. We develop a new time-base synchronization technique based on a Least-square Linear Regression algorithm (LLR). We show that LLR is able to perform time-base synchronization with the same accuracy of a PLL and with a substantial gain of rapidity. Finally, we discuss the implementation of the LLR technique as an intermediate time-base synchronization level between the network and a generic multimedia application.

Improving Clock Synchronization for MPEG-2 Services over ATMM Networks
A stable clock indication is needed for the processing and playout of MPEG-2 streams. ATM networks can support the transfer of such streams but contribute signiicantly (as well as other system operations) to delay and delay variation. The MPEG-2 standard speciies strong temporal constraints for processing and presentation. MPEG-2 is also based on the assumption of a common time base shared amon...
متن کاملA New Unequal Error Protection Technique Based on the Mutual Information of the MPEG-4 Video Frames over Wireless Networks
The performance of video transmission over wireless channels is limited by the channel noise. Thus many error resilience tools have been incorporated into the MPEG-4 video compression method. In addition to these tools, the unequal error protection (UEP) technique has been proposed to protect the different parts in an MPEG-4 video packet with different channel coding rates based on the rate...
متن کاملAccurate Clock Synchronization for IEEE 802.11-Based Wireless Networks
Clock synchronization is an essential building block for many control mechanisms used in wireless networks, for example, frequency hopping, power management, and packet scheduling. Although the IEEE 802.11 standard [1, 2, 3, 4] provides a clock synchronization mechanism, it was never designed to support higher-layer network services or mechanisms, and has well-documented problems [5] especially...
متن کاملIntegration of high accurate Clock Synchronization into Ethernet-based Distributed Systems
Emerging networks destined to handle voice, data and Internet Protocol (IP) traffic benefit from a reliable, high accurate distributed time service. In most cases, the end-to-end communication path requires tuning and continuous maintenance to achieve acceptable quality for service integration. Several sources of latency, as they are protocol processing, system transfer rates and frame forwardi...
متن کاملRobustness of multiplexing protocols for audio-visual services over wireless networks
The protocols used to multiplex the various streams in an audio-visual service (such as MPEG 2 Systems and ITU-T H.223) have an important impact on the quality of the service. The fact that wireless channels are often associated with high bit-error rates which are often bursty means that the multiplexing protocols should be designed to be robust against such errors. In this paper, we suggest tw...
